DL-4A, DL-FA delidder™ (2005-2007)

DL4A Panel
DL4A

Description: Our fifth-generation,  programmable servomotor table drive system was ready before the rest of the D5, so we used it on several builds called the DL-4A. The drive allows two new convenience features accessed from the panel:  "datum offset" resets "home" to any desired position, and "homerun" allows single- or two-way cutting.  Leadscrews were PTFE-coated and self-lubricating. Some of the last DL-4A machines received chassis strengthening as part of the D5 prototyping program. Cutter motors were mostly 6800 RPM models giving 7000 max at the spindle. ESD-controlled vacuum hoses and plumbing were standard.

Identify By: Depth of Cut controls on top, and round rails (from DL-4), plus engraved control panel with cutter speed units "% OF 7000 RPM", Feed Rate units "INCHES/SEC", Stroke Size Units "INCHES".

Variants: Some "F" model machines with fiber-optic fixturing, large chassis, and worktable trays were made in this period, called the DL-FA. Since the primary feature of the DL-4A was the combination of round rails with servomotor, there was no "R" or rotary machine with "A" designation.

Problem Areas: Few reported to date; the round rail system can be tweaked to be almost as good as the D5 flat rail, but is more likely to loose accuracy over time. Only the latest production models can make best use of the ASH08 high speed cutting tool designed for the D5's higher spindle speed.

Status: Not sold in large numbers due to short production run, superceded by D5L and D5F series machines with flat rail techology.

Support: Fully supported from trouble shooting and retraining through complete overhaui to as-manufactured standards.

Overhaul Cost (Typical):  $2400-3400 depending on condition.
